Your trip begins with a short stroll through our subtropical gardens, down towards the riverbank where the boat waits. There, you’ll be warmly welcomed by your guide before you step aboard, settle in ready for a peaceful 90-minute excursion on the water.

Setting out to explore the south side

As the boat moves out of the creek, you’ll first see the waterside cottages and yacht club of Port Navas before heading out onto the wider Helford River.

You’ll pass over the Helford’s seagrass meadows, a remarkable underwater habitat that supports marine life, recently reinstated and thriving thanks to concentrated conservation efforts.

Look closely and there is life everywhere: grey herons standing still on the rocks, little egrets flashing white against the green, cormorants drying their wings and, if you’re lucky, the bright blue flicker of a kingfisher above the water.

On the right tide, the boat slips quietly into Frenchman’s Creek, one of the most atmospheric corners of the Helford and the famously inspiration for Daphne du Maurier and her namesake novel. In this hidden inlet, weave through ancient trees that drape far into the water, and listen for birdsong that carries through the trees. You’re in the heart of the forest here.

At the end of Frenchman’s Creek you’ll see the boat Iron Duke, owned by Percy “Powder” Thurburn, while hearing stories of this local legend and artist. From there, the journey continues towards Helford Village, where an active ferry crossing has linked the two sides of the river for hundreds of years.

Historic gardens, D-Day landings and smuggler’s caves

Crossing across the mouth of the Helford towards the north side, you’ll discover quiet beaches and some of the Helford’s most loved gardens. Look out for Glendurgan Garden and Trebah Garden, each magnificent, with their own unique stories. Trebah carries a remarkable wartime history, with troops departing from its beach for the D-Day landings.

From this viewpoint, the shoreline reveals details you might otherwise miss, from small caves used by smugglers to tucked-away houses owned by the rich and famous.
